There’s plenty of value in the Golden Boot market and with some going 17/2 the field, along with 4 each/way places, it’s a market I would be happy to get involved in.
Following the persuasive case from Mark Langdon Darren Bent’s seen support but I still would want to be getting with him for the top scorer. His worst goal tally in the last 6 seasons is 6 but that was when he was ignored at Tottenham and his tally of 17 last season, while having switched clubs mid – season, was impressive and a strike rate of 9 goals in 16 games will see him placed at least this season, which is the main reason behind my tip for him.
create plenty of chances for him, as he did for Hugo Rolldaega at Wigan, while Marc Albrighton will be relishing the opportunity to shine in the Ashley Young role. While his departure will not please some at Villa, it does mean that Bent will be taking penalties and Young scored 4 of those last season, which could be a deciding factor.
Another player I can’t let go un - backed must be Robin Van Persie, who will win this if able to play 30+ games for Arsenal this season based on a strike rate of 18 goals in the Premier when injured for 5 months of the year. He’s never made it to more than 28 goals in a campaign but it’s a gamble worth taking for his talent and each/way punts should surely be rewarded on him. If he doesn’t quite reach those heights, then a banker – backup bet is to back him to beArsenal’s top League scorer at 11/10 with Paddy Power. While Gerviniho looks an inspired signing he won’t be taking penalties and Van Persie can get the better of him over the course of the season.
Spurs have four top strikers, but none of Jermain Defoe (40/1), Roman Pavlyuchenko (50/1), Peter Crouch (100/1) or Robbie Keane (80/1) have ever looked prolific enough to claim such an award and the goals are generally shared around White Hart Lane.
Goals are likely to be shared at Anfield too, which is why Suarez or Carroll do not get the vote. Both should go well and Suarez is a lethal player but you get the feeling that it may well be a case of one feeding the other for the good of the team and that’s only just enough to stop me from going in.
Speaking of top scorers for the season, I can’t let Asamoah Gyan go unbacked for the title of top Sunderland scorer – His tally of 10 goals last season was impressive for a debutant in the Premiership and with the two biggest stars from his debut season gone, I have a feeling he’ll win this despite the Nations Cup.
The reasons above are also largely the factor behind putting up Rodallega for Wigan’s top goalscorer. Another short priced favourite yes, but his tally of 9 goals last season was impressive and while N’Zogbia is gone, there doesn’t look a player able to match him yet – Victor Moses needs time.
Advice: Golden Boot
1 pt each/way Robin Van Persie (10/1 Hills)
